The inventor of the horse collar, SS Roy Williams, has been fined $12,500 by the league for using the illegal technique on the Chicago Bears' TE Desmond Clark this past weekend. The tackling technique where the defensive player grabs the offensive player from the back of the shoulder pads and pulls him down has beeen outlawed since 2005. While the move was a cause of several injuries, you can't help but wonder whether the league is getting soft. From banning helmet to helmet contact to protecting the passer, the NFL has instilled several new rules to prevent injuries. I understand that they're trying to prevent serious injuries but I thought this was the gridiron; a tackling, hard-hitting, full contact sport filled with tough guys like Ray "the killer" Lewis, Troy Polamalu and Brian Urlacher. The state of the game is changing, for better or worse probably depends on which side of the ball you play on. I wonder what old schoolers like Ronnie Lott or the real LT would say if they were playing ball now?
